Embracing Digital Transformation in Cultural Heritage: MUSEU’s Impact in 2024
As 2024 comes to a close, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the strides made in digitizing cultural heritage collections and enhancing access to valuable historical and cultural content. At MUSEU, we’ve been actively supporting cultural heritage institutions (CHIs) in their journey towards digital transformation, helping them share their collections with a global audience. Here’s a look at some of our key contributions and milestones this year.
Pioneering Contributions to Europeana
This year, MUSEU made significant contributions to Europeana, one of Europe’s largest digital platforms for cultural heritage. We added three fascinating 3D objects from Belgian cultural heritage institutions — the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, and M Leuven / Collectie Vlaamse Gemeenschap — as part of the Twin-IT campaign. These objects, along with many others, help bring history to life in a dynamic and engaging way.
In addition, several new collections from our partners were successfully aggregated into the platform, including contributions from the GoTellGo Cultural Association (Italy), the Koos Rauws Collection (Netherlands), and the University of Cyprus (Graeci Project). These additions further enrich the diversity and depth of content available on Europeana. Today, MUSEU proudly aggregates over 1.1 million datasets, making these valuable resources easily accessible on Europeana.

Empowering Cultural Institutions with Training and Tools
MUSEU’s commitment to digital transformation goes beyond aggregation. In collaboration with the Europeana Academy, we developed the course “Introduction to Metadata and Mapping to the Europeana Data Model (EDM)”. This course serves as an essential capacity-building tool for cultural heritage organisations, enabling them to prepare high-quality digital content and metadata for sharing with Europeana. By equipping cultural organizations with the knowledge and skills they need, we’re helping ensure that their collections are both discoverable and impactful in the digital space.
Contributions to Historiana and New E-Learning Activities
In addition to our work with Europeana, MUSEU contributed to Historiana, an innovative platform that offers history educators across Europe access to engaging digital tools and learning resources. We created two source collections, Emblematic Figures of the Great Discoveries and Figures emblématiques des grandes découvertes in French, along with two e-learning activities: Development of Humanism and Protestantism Through the Invention of Printing and Propaganda During the Fascist Era in Italy: Explicit and Hidden Messages
These resources aim to inspire and support educators in their teaching of historical events and figures, helping students better understand the forces that have shaped our world.
Celebrating Women’s History and More through Europeana Blogs
At MUSEU, we believe in using digital platforms to highlight important themes and figures. This year, we contributed several editorials to Europeana, focusing on a diverse range of topics:
- Nilde Jotti (available in English, Italian, and French), celebrating the life and work of the Italian politician. In honor of Women’s History Month.
- An Imaginary Interview with Maria Montessori (available in English, Italian, and French), exploring the life of the renowned educator and her lasting impact on education.
- Wicker Chairs in English, Italian, French, and Dutch, offering a unique perspective on this iconic piece of furniture and its role in European design history.
Exploring New Digital Galleries
To further enrich the user experience on Europeana, we created four captivating galleries, available in English, French, and Italian. These galleries feature:
- The Teddy Bear: One of the Most Iconic Toys in History
- Stromboli: The Perpetually Active Sicilian Volcano
- The Many Faces of Julius Caesar
- Antony and Cleopatra
These galleries provide a visual and educational journey through some of history’s most fascinating figures, objects, and events, showcasing the power of digital storytelling in bringing history to life.
Looking Ahead: A Year of Continued Growth and Innovation
As we look to the future, MUSEU remains committed to supporting cultural heritage institutions in their digital journeys. Whether it’s through aggregating new collections, creating training materials, or developing educational resources, we are proud to play a role in the ongoing transformation of cultural heritage in the digital age.
We are proud to be a trusted aggregator for museum collections in the Europeana Initiative/Data Space for Cultural Heritage!
2024 has been a year of growth and collaboration, and we look forward to continuing this work in the years to come. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting projects as we continue to build a digital future for cultural heritage.
