Description:
Access to cultural heritage networks across Europe
The European project ATHENA is a network of good practices financed by the European eContentplus programme, which develops starting from the results of the MINERVA and MICHAEL projects and, like these, is coordinated by the ICCU to account of the Ministry of Culture. Over 120 institutions are associated with the project, mainly, but not exclusively, museums located in 20 EU member states and three non-European countries.
ATHENA’s objectives were to:
- support and encourage the participation of museums and other cultural institutions in Europeana;
- produce a set of technical tools, recommendations and guidelines that museums can use as part of their digitization projects and to facilitate the integration of their digital content into Europeana;
- identify digital contents of a museum nature of interest to Europeana as an expression of European culture;
- contribute to the integration into the Europeana repository of descriptions of objects and documents relating to the various sectors of cultural heritage, in collaboration with other projects relating more directly to the field of libraries and archives;
- develop a software platform that supports this integration, facilitating the semantic interoperability of the data.
