January 24 reminds us of the importance of education worldwide
Digital Cultural Heritage plays an important role in enhancing education by promoting values of respect, tolerance, and responsibility, and by stimulating critical thinking in young people.
This is why we are happy to support and celebrate January 24 as the International Day of Education.
We are involved in many cooperative projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing education through digital cultural heritage.
In one of our latest European projects, “My Sporting Heritage” (funded under Erasmus+), launched in 2024 under the coordination of the National Museum of Sport in Nice, we identify, preserve, and promote European physical practices and the values they embody. The project involves sport and citizenship organisations, the European Cultural Route of Sport, Radiona NGO (Croatia), and the University of Amsterdam. Paying attention to how sport can intentionally or unintentionally educate us, shape our way of thinking, and influence our beliefs is essential in order to recognize its value, understand its history, promote it, share it, and safeguard it. Several workshops and online conferences have been organised to assess Europe’s sporting heritage and make research on this subject accessible to as many people as possible.
What resources are available now?
We have contributed to these objectives by creating a virtual exhibition that highlights the shared heritage of European countries while also celebrating their unique local traditions and physical practices.
In addition, the project’s latest results include a digital educational kit containing several games, which are available to download for free in multiple languages. The first two games are a board escape game and a geocaching game that introduce the topic of sporting heritage to children and young people aged 11–14, but both can be played by intergenerational audiences. The games aim to educate players about athletes, events, and venues from the history of diverse sports across the European continent.
Over the next few months, new products will be developed and tested in partner countries to pave the way for the final conference, which is planned for 12–13 September at the Technical Museum in Zagreb, just in front of the Kranjčevićeva Stadium and the memorial to the famous basketball player Dražen Petrović.
