Aggregation, Shared Services, and 3D Technologies in Italy

Last 25 November 2024, the Central Institute of Italian Libraries organised the seminar “The challenges of digital cultural heritage: aggregation, shared services, 3D” the Europeana Country Group Italy of which MCA is a member.

The event, hosted by the Central National Library of Rome, provided an opportunity to reflect on the challenges of digital cultural heritage, particularly regarding the state of aggregation, shared services, and 3D technologies.

During the first session, participants learnt about the experience of the German Digital Library, the state of the art of CulturaItalia and the Italian Digital Library, and they listened to the current challenges of some central cultural institutes responsible for archives and sound and video archives (ICAR, ICBSA).

The second session, moderated by MCA’s project manager and MUSEU Manager, Maria Teresa Natale focused on the topic of 3D digitization, featuring a series of presentations by both international and Italian experts:  Kate Fernie (CARARE) made a general presentation on 3D and cultural heritage, while  Ivan Erhel (Tech4Heritage) introduced an inclusive Iraqi/European initiative to train people to 3D preservation, while Caterina Rossetti (Digital Library) spoke about the challenges of 3D digitisation in Italy.

The event was concluded with a presentation by Valentina Bagnoli (Supervisory Board Chair of the Europeana Foundation) who spoke about the transformation of Europeana from platform to DataSpace.
