DE-BIAS is an international project that is developing a tool to identify misuse of language in the metadata of digital cultural collections of libraries, museums, archives, to foster the use of inclusive language in cultural heritage collections. This tool is based on a list of terms created from the Words Matter guide, produced in five languages. The objectives of this tool are on the one hand to detect and contextualize problematic descriptions of cultural heritage objects on Europeana.eu, and on the other hand to provide a service to cultural heritage institutions to investigate and improve the language used to describe collections.

To ensure that the tool works properly and correctly identifies problematic terms, we are launching evaluation campaigns using the CrowdHeritage crowdsourcing platform.

We would like to invite you to participate in this important evaluation event of the DE-BIAS project, organized by the Michael Culture Association, the European Fashion Heritage Association and Eccom. We believe that your input can be very valuable in assessing the effectiveness of this service. The event will take place online on 25 September 2024, between 3pm and 5pm.

During this event we will present the DE-BIAS project and perform a live demonstration of the CrowdHeritage platform. This will be followed by the evaluation activities, where we will ask you to leave feedback on the terms identified via the CrowdHeritage platform and to add comments if you feel it is necessary.

Your participation is important for the improvement of the quality and functionality of the tool for the cultural heritage sector.

DE-BIAS è un progetto internazionale che sta sviluppando uno strumento in grado di individuare usi impropri del linguaggio nei metadati delle collezioni culturali digitali di biblioteche, musei, archivi, per favorire l’uso di un linguaggio inclusivo nelle collezioni del patrimonio culturale. Questo strumento si basa su una lista di termini creata a partire dalla guida Words Matter, realizzata in cinque lingue. Gli obiettivi di questo strumento sono da un lato rilevare e contestualizzare le descrizioni problematiche degli oggetti del patrimonio culturale presenti su Europeana. eu, dall’altro fornire un servizio alle istituzioni del patrimonio culturale per indagare e migliorare il linguaggio utilizzato per descrivere le collezioni.

Per garantire che lo strumento funzioni adeguatamente e identifichi correttamente i termini problematici, stiamo avviando delle campagne di valutazione utilizzando la piattaforma di crowdsourcing CrowdHeritage.

Durante questo evento presenteremo il progetto DE-BIAS ed effettueremo una dimostrazione dal vivo della piattaforma CrowdHeritage. Seguiranno le attività di valutazione, in cui ti chiederemo di lasciare un feedback sui termini individuati tramite la piattaforma CrowdHeritage e di aggiungere commenti, se lo ritieni necessario.
