The open letter to the European Commission emphasizes the importance of digital technologies in preserving and promoting cultural heritage (CH). It advocates for a broadened definition of cultural heritage to include both tangible and intangible aspects.
The letter highlights various challenges and opportunities in the digital cultural heritage sector, such as:
- the need for capacity building,
- long-term preservation strategies,
- increased value of CH through innovation and funding
- investment in research and development of technologies to reduce the environmental impact of digitization.
We emphasize the role of digital cultural heritage in fostering social cohesion, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. We also stresse the importance of international standards, multilingualism, and reusability of digital cultural materials. Ultimately, it urges the European Commission to take proactive measures to address these issues and fully leverage the potential of digital cultural heritage in Europe.
