We’re co-leading the European Heritage Hub’s new digital task force
We are proud to announce that we will be co-leading the newly launched Digital Task Force of the EU-funded European Heritage Hub, alongside the Europeana Foundation. This Task Force brings together members of the European Heritage Alliance to tackle one of the most defining challenges facing the cultural heritage sector today: ensuring that digital transformation remains ethical, inclusive, sustainable, and above all, people-centred.
From high-resolution imaging and 3D reconstruction to sensors and artificial intelligence, digital technologies are unlocking new possibilities to document, preserve, research and share cultural heritage. But technology on its own is not the goal. As co-leads of this Task Force, we believe digital tools must remain in service of the sector, complementing, not replacing, the expertise of heritage professionals and the knowledge held by communities.
This conviction sits at the heart of everything the Digital Task Force will pursue.
The Task Force will structure its work around three thematic pillars:
- 1. Competitiveness Exploring the relationship between digital transformation and the competitiveness of the cultural heritage sector, particularly as discussions on the next EU budget take shape.
- 2. Social and Environmental Sustainability Addressing inclusion, accessibility, the digital skills gap and employment, alongside the environmental impact and energy demands of digital infrastructure.
- 3. Future Technologies Monitoring emerging technologies as they enter the heritage field, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence — its opportunities, its risks, and its responsible use.
Over the coming months, the Digital Task Force will:
- Promote and coordinate digital initiatives, research and capacity-building activities carried out by Alliance members through the Hub
- Organise dedicated digital sessions at Hub events
- Produce digital-focused communications for the sector
- Strengthen collaboration and representation across Hub and partner events
The Digital Task Force launches alongside a new Music Task Force, led by the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), the European Early Music Network (REMA), B’Rock and the Centre Européen de Musique, which will champion music as a cornerstone of European heritage, culture and public policy.
Together, the two Task Forces reflect the European Heritage Hub’s broader ambition: turning the expertise of heritage professionals and communities into coordinated action and advocacy at the European level — ensuring that both Europe’s musical heritage and its digital future remain firmly at the heart of the European project.
We look forward to working on a digital transition that truly serves people and communities who make cultural heritage meaningful!
