MCA with MEPs – Discussing MFF for the cultural sector

On September 23, MCA was there during the roundtable discussion at the European Parliament entitled ‘Culture in the Next EU Budget’.

The objectives of the meeting was to discuss with MEPs involved in drafting the Parliament’s position on the next European budget and raising our concerns.

The roundtable saw MEPs – CULT Committee Chair Nela Riehl and rapporteurs Hannes Heide and Carla Taveres, cultural networks like MCA got a chance to raise their voice.

The main takeaways from MCA perspective:
It could have been worse…
MEPs agreed that the Commission’s proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework is a good starting point. But the fact that AgoraEU’s budget increases *at first glance* the culture budget should not distract from the fact that this is the bare minimum.

Where is culture beyond AgoraEU?
In the current proposal, the creative and cultural sector is apparently absent from other funding programs. MCA is particularly concerned that there is no longer a pillar dedicated to culture and creativity in Horizon Europe. The question of the presence of culture in the “Digital Leadership” envelope is equally urgent.

Let’s open the ecochamber!
In the room, there was general consensus regarding the opinions expressed by MEPs and sector representatives who participated in the open floor session. Now more than ever, we need to talk to other policymakers, reach out to other committees in the Parliament, and make the case for culture to the different member states representatives.
