When Art sits at the table: New Europeana galleries to discover

We have been working on new galleries with digital heritage on Europeana platform. You can find digitised cultural content from the four corners of Europe!

We produced three galleries as part of the Digital Storytelling Festival on May 13 & 14, 2025! This international event supports cultural heritage professionals, teachers, creative people and students from Europe to develop their narrative skills and tell stories that explore culture. This year, workshops are being organised around a main theme: food. For this occasion, we contributed to the festival’s creation through the creation of three galleries featuring three main themes: Food & Religion, Vegetarian/ Vegetalian/ Veggie and Table setting. In these, you find different artworks of all types, from all eras.

A painting depicting an intimate scene between a woman and a young girl. The woman with her brown hair tied up and dressed in a blue and black striped top with a white lace collar, is seated and gently embraces the child. The girl with blonde hair tied back wears a white blouse and looks directly at the viewer with a serious expression. She is holding a small cylindrical object in her hands. They are seated at a table covered with a white cloth in a room adorned with framed pictures on dark green walls, evoking a 19th-century bourgeois interior. The atmosphere is tender and filled with affection.

Food and Religion is a gallery that presents the role of food in Art. Food can be used as a contextual or central element in works that refer to episodes from Greek mythology or Biblical history. The place of food may be secondary in the explanation but it nevertheless occupies a central place in the representation. We can therefore easily wonder about its role and question its significance.

Vegetarian/ Vegetalian/ Veggie is another gallery whose ambition is to present the subject of society through an artistic prism. Vegetarianism and veganism are diets that exclude certain animal products but they differ in the degree of exclusion. Beyond being a dietary habit, they have become real societal, political and economic issues justifying advertising, scientific studies, mockery, caricatures and communities surrounding them. This gallery offers an insight into the impact of this dietary behavior on global society.

A miniature black table with six legs is elegantly set with a detailed silver table service. The table features multi-branched candelabras, serving dishes, cutlery, carafes, tureens and various other dining accessories, all crafted with remarkable precision. The arrangement resembles a lavish banquet in an aristocratic or royal style but in a reduced scale—likely intended for a dollhouse or as a display piece. The background is neutral highlighting the silver shine and the sophistication of the setup.

Finally, the last gallery takes us straight to the heart of the dining experience from table setting to serving utensils,etc/ Crockery, table settings and table dressings are all elements that enhance the dining experience. The way it is organised and presented can be synonymous with harmony and homogeneity but it can also be as offbeat as Art in its broadest definition. With these considerations in mind, you will find in this gallery the various utensils necessary for this experience and the final renderings that mean these appliances can be described as “Art”!
